Transhumance, (literally, "crossing ground") is the traditional farming practice of seasonal migration of livestock along storied tracks towards better climate conditions, is now inserted into UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
These great grass roads, called ”Tratturi”, still partially preserved, are now an heritage, a part of the economic and social history of Italy. The Regi Tratturi, 110 meters wide, cross Molise and are connected by smaller paths reaching towns and villages.
Take this opportunity to walk the Tratturi together with the organization AttraversoilMolise to discover history, culture and culinary traditions of absolute value. You will be seduced by nature, visit archeological sites from the time before the Romans, meet friendly and curious people and enjoy the traditional Molisan food and wine.
The walks are made in groups and assessed as light to moderate and will take you from the mountain and hill paths to the Adriatic Sea.
The starting point of the trip is the beautiful medieval village of Ripabottoni, situated 650 meters above sea. The village is located in the center of Molise and offers fantastic views of the rolling countryside. From here we comfortably reach both the Matese Mountains and the Adriatic Sea.
Accommodation: in the village Karin runs a B&B and house rentals. The accommodations offered are double and single rooms in various houses in the village, only 5 minutes walk from each other. The rooms are individually decorated, comfortable and with private bathrooms.

Thursday, 28th May
Arrival in Ripabottoni and check-in. Welcome and tour briefing followed by buffet dinner.
Friday, 29th May
Mountain, Archeology, Cheese.
Trekking about 12 km.
The bus brings us to the Matese mountains and Campitello di Sepino (1100 a.s.l) where we walk the path called "Sentiero 3 frati". At lunchtime we visit a noted farm which produces superb local cheeses; we stop here for a light lunch consisting of products from the farm. After lunch we enter the “Royal Tratturo Pescasseroli – Candela” that crosses "Altilia", an important archeological site with remains from both the Roman and the Samnite period. After the guided tour the bus takes us back to Ripabottoni. Traditional regional dinner.
Saturday, 30th May
Castle ruins, Regi Tratturi , Truffles
Trekking about 14 km
The bus brings us to Castropignano village. Our trek will start from the Castle along the Regio Tratturo Castel di Sangro – Lucera. During our lunch stop we will have the pleasure to taste the fresh, high quality truffle that is picked in Molise. We continue our trek along the Tratturo up to Ripalimosani village. Time for a coffee and walk in the village. We return to Ripabottoni and a traditional regional dinner.
Sunday, 31st May
Provvidenti village, relax
Walk about 6 km
After breakfast we start our walk directly from Ripabottoni. Today's destination is Provvidenti, a very small village about six km away. After lunch we return to Ripabottoni by car and a relaxing afternoon. Late in the afternoon pizza preparation and Pizza dinner in the garden.
Monday, 1st June
Adriatic Sea, Regio Tratturo L'Aquila – Foggia, Wine
Trekking about 12 km
The bus takes us to Marina di Montenero di Bisaccia where we start our trekking along the sea up to Torre di Petacciato, a ruin of an ancient tower. Time for a bath (depending on weather conditions). Transfer to a winery for a light lunch composed of products of the territory with wine tasting. Transfer back to the beach and trekking up to the ancient fishermen's village of Termoli. Leisure time and shopping before our outdoor traditional fish dinner. After dinner the bus takes us back to Ripabottoni.
Tuesday, 2nd June
Valle del Cigno, Larino, Olive oil
Trekking about 12 km
The bus brings us to Casacalenda. Today's trekking is along the beautiful Valle del Cigno up to Larino, a very important city of the Samnites, the first people of this region, defeated by the Romans. after the quick visit to the city, our time will be dedicated to high quality olive oil and its production. We will taste the exquisite Larino's olive oil that we get to try during the light lunch served at a private house. We continue our trek on via Francigena and Tratturo before coming back to Ripabottoni. This evening we will have our traditional dinner in a restaurant not far from Ripabottoni.
Wednesday, 3rd June
Time to say Good-by to Ripabottoni.
Flights and transfers: Closest airport is Pescara (1,5 hours by car or train). Rome (3,5 hours by car or train), Naples and Bari (2,5 hours by car or train). For a small group of max. 8 people, we can help with the hiring of a minibus with a driver if desired.
Minimum number of participants: 10 (the organizers has the right to cancel the trip if less than 10 participants. In this case the registration fee will be refunded).
Total price 790 euro per person.
What is included in the price?
Six nights with breakfast in a shared double room, all lunches and dinners with wine/water as specified in the program, English speaking guide during the tours, shuttle to the trekking starting places, membership to the Association (if not already member).
Not included: The flight and transfer to and from the airport, travel insurance.
Registration fee: 150 Euros to be paid within 10 days after booking, the fee is non-refundable. The registration fee will be refunded if the organizer cancels the trip, as specified above.
For a minimum of five participants is provided a discount of 5% per person.
